How is your relationship with money?
Work and finances can be huge factors in most people’s lives. Most of us work for a lot of years during our lifetimes and we require money to survive. What is your relationship to money and work? Are you even aware of how your past might be affecting your present day perceptions, outlooks, beliefs and successes in regards to money and work?
Take a few minutes to consider the following questions. Make notes if you can.
Was there a lot of talk about work ethics, or laziness in your family home?
Did your parents/caregivers earn a steady income that provided for your family?
Did your parents/caregivers have fears and concerns about work and money that were vocalized in front of you?
Did your parents/caregivers ever complain about the work they were doing or having to do?
Was there jealousy in your family towards those that had more than your family?
Were there fights over inheritances?
Was there money lost, gambling, or over spending?
Did you move around a lot because of work and money?
Was there ever a lack of food?
Was there a family member or yourself that had severe illness or disability that affected family income?
Did you hear or witness your parents/caregivers, or other household members fighting about money or work?
Did you have to contribute to the family income?
Did you or anyone in your family ever have to claim bankruptcy?
Did you or a family member ever have a business fail?
Were there ever losses on investments that caused stress about money?
As a child were you always told that there wasn’t money for that?
Do family members make you feel guilty for what you achieved in life?
How do you feel about the state of your own finances currently?
Do you worry about your financial security?
Now that you have considered these questions, think about what your beliefs currently are about money and work. Make notes if you can.
What are the things that go through your mind in regards to work and money?
Do you think that any of your current beliefs might be connected to your past experiences? Are these beliefs even true for you? These beliefs that you have either created for yourself, or were the beliefs passed down from family members, or outside influences, affect your everyday experiences of work and money.
