Got Guilt?

People may experience feelings of guilt for something that they did/said/or caused that violated an ethical, moral, or legal code. Something that caused ill feelings or harm to others.

They may feel guilty for things that they were told they SHOULD feel guilty for.

Some people feel guilty because they feel like they aren’t doing enough.

Some people feel guilty because they feel like they should be, what they believe is a better version of themselves; they should be taller, prettier, smarter and so on.

SIGNS OF GUILT:

  • Anxiety

  • Muscle tension

  • Crying

  • Regret

  • Upset stomach

  • Insomnia

  • Worry

SYMPTOMS OF GUILT:

  • You are super analytic of your every move and action.

  • You could be very indecisive because you are afraid you might make the wrong decision.

  • You may suffer from low self-esteem.

  • You may go overboard in thinking that everyone's needs and wants are more important than your own.

  • You may have a hard time expressing your truth, for fear of disappointing or hurting someone.

Sometimes our guilt feelings aren’t warranted. We may be thinking that we should have had more control over a situation than we did. Sometimes, the situation or the event was beyond our control. We may wish that we could have altered the outcome but we actually couldn’t have. So by beating ourselves up by feeling guilty, we are punishing ourselves for something that was not in our control in the first place.

Guilt can at times be beneficial as it serves as a reminder to identify and correct behavior that may be hurtful.
